Christian Grothoff gave a talk on the importance of privacy in digital payment infrastructure and the features of GNU Taler designed for that purpose during his visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event was co-organized by the Argentine Observatory of Information Technology Law (ODIA) and NUMIS, led by Sebastian Marchano.
For years, we have debated cameras, facial recognition, spyware, surveillance intercepts, and massive databases. Meanwhile, another infrastructure capable of recording very precise details of our lives has grown up right before our eyes: the one we use every day to pay for our daily activities. Every time we use a digital wallet, make a transfer, or pay via other electronic means, we do more than just transfer money; we also generate data. Does it have to be this way? The visit to Buenos Aires by Christian Grothoff—one of the creators and lead developers of GNU Taler—offers a rare opportunity in Argentina to discuss this question with someone who has spent years working on a concrete answer.
